Donut Van in Berry
Although most of my childhood Summers were spent up at the Central Coast or North Coast; over the last 5 years, I have been steadily building up my knowledge of the South Coast as my visits to this area have become more and more frequent. I am not sure if you share this misconception with me but I always tended to go north because I thought it was warmer. This may indeed be the case, however the sun still bathes the South Coast at so many different points and unlike the north, the Winters are true Winter wonderlands especially around the Highlands and it gives us the chance to build the log fires, get the woollies and ugg boots out and settle in for the long night with a mug of hot chocolate in hand.

The Three Sisters
The Blue Mountains provide a perfect combination of sunshine, nature and physical activity with hundreds of bush walking trails to be found. To get to the heart of the Blue Mountains, Katoomba it is just a 90 minute drive from Sydney along the M4 Motorway. The scenic route which takes a little longer but allows you to enjoy the Blue Mountains National Park is via Bell’s Line of Road which starts at Richmond.

HouseBoat on the Hawkesbury
The Central Coast is a great place to visit at any time of the year for a short day trip, a romantic weekend away, a week of golf or a houseboat adventure. It is also a fabulous destination for families on school holidays, a great place to get married and is fast becoming a destination for foodies wishing to taste regional fare at its best.

As a Sydneysider, it is almost considered a rite of passage to head to the Hunter Valley for a weekend getaway once you're of the age to drink and enjoy the taste of fine wine and champagne. Competing with the Barossa in South Australia, the Hunter's reputation is strong and longstanding for producing the highest calibre of Australian wine.

Skiing in the Snowies
Despite our international marketing campaigns showing off Australia's best places to visit as all sun, sea and surf, this is not entirely the case. While we may not have the quantity of snow or powder as North America's ski villages of Aspen, Whistler or Vale or even come close to the altitude of Europe's mountains and their cold, cold temperatures responsible for producing masses of the white stuff, Sydneysiders can still learn the art and skill of skiing or snowboarding with ski slopes just six hours away from the city.

These days Sydney Olympic Park is better known for the football games and Royal Easter Show, but if you head out there on the weekend you will find thousands of people hanging out in the adjacent Bicentennial Park. This has to be one of the best parks in Sydney, partly because of its sheer size, but also because of the number of things to do there.

Haldon Street, Lakemba (Image Source: City of Canterbury )
If you live in Sydney or have even visited it, chances are you have an image of Lakemba being full of Lebanese Muslim standing alongside the roads ready to attack everyone who is not “one of them”. Even if your image is not that extreme, it is fairly likely that Lakemba is nowhere near the top of your “Great places to go in Sydney” list.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge from The Rocks. Great place for a picnic!
Christmas and New Years are now past. We have all enjoyed or sometimes endured family celebrations either interstate or here in Sydney. The last of the crackers, dips, ham and chocolate have disappeared from the fridge along with our wages and waistlines. Is it me or does Christmas get more and more expensive each year?
